Let’s be honest. When most people hear “defense startup,” they picture missiles, drones, or some next-generation hardware that costs a billion euros per unit. Comand AI is none of that.

Founded in 2023 by Loïc Mougeolle, Comand AI develops AI-powered tools for command and control in defense operations. The problem it is solving is not a hardware problem. It never was. It is a software gap that has existed for decades inside military institutions that, until recently, nobody had the nerve or the skill set to fix.

Mougeolle came from Naval Group, where he led an innovation incubator. His co-founder and CTO, Antoine Chassang, is a CentraleSupelec graduate with experience at companies like Snapchat. That combination, defense industry depth plus consumer tech execution speed, is exactly the kind of founder pairing that makes a product category-defining rather than just incrementally better.

The company’s main product is called Prevail. It supports command center officers in planning maneuvers under time and resource constraints. It also analyses past operations, extracts insights, and distributes them to units to improve future performance.

Think of it as the operating system for a military brain. Officers feed in terrain data, enemy positions, orders from higher command, and real-time operational inputs. Prevail synthesises all of it. Fast.

The team draws from Palantir, OpenAI, consulting firms, government ministries, and NATO. That cross-disciplinary blend is not accidental. It is the product.

Who Invested in Comand AI’s €32M Series A?

Here is the kicker. This is not just a VC round with a big number attached.

Comand AI raised €32m in Series A funding led by Blossom Capital. Swedish defense prime Saab also invested, as did Polish investor Expeditions.

Saab. A company that builds fighter jets and naval systems. Putting money into a three-year-old Parisian software startup. That tells you something.

Saab made a strategic investment of €11.1m for a 10% equity stake in Comand AI. That is not passive capital sitting in a portfolio somewhere. That is a major European defence manufacturer anchoring itself to the idea that software wins wars now. It is a statement. And the market should read it as one.Earlier backers include Eurazeo, Frst, Kima Ventures, and Tiny VC. The Series A had reportedly been in the works for more than six months.

This raise comes roughly a year and a half after the company’s €8.5m round in December 2024. So from €8.5m to €32m in under 18 months. That kind of velocity does not happen without real traction on the ground. Investors do not write cheques that size on a pitch deck alone.

Blossom Capital, which led the round, has been increasing its defense bets. It also backed Estonian air defense startup Frankenburg Technologies, making Comand AI part of a deliberate pattern of investment rather than a one-off bet.

How Comand AI’s Battlefield Software Works

Comand AI is not building a chatbot for generals. Not even close.

Prevail takes data inputs from operation orders and documents from higher command, along with real-time operational data like terrain and enemy positions. It runs AI simulations and lets officers deliver orders to human and robot units on the battlefield quickly. The models are trained on military orders and data and can operate in denied communications areas.

That last part. Read it again. Denied communications areas. Battlefield connectivity is not guaranteed. A system that needs stable internet is not a battlefield system. It is a liability. Prevail is built to hold its ground even when the network goes dark.

Mougeolle’s stated goal is to help officers plan and conduct operations four times faster, with four times fewer people. And beyond planning, the platform also offers post-operation analysis tools that help officers train better and plan smarter for the next mission.

The reality is, speed of decision is the thing that determines outcomes in modern conflict. Not just firepower.

For a surveillance operation, Comand AI claims to reduce planning time by a factor of ten. Mougeolle put it plainly: “Gaining an hour on a 12-hour operation is enormous. In one hour, a fighter jet can do a lot.”

So. The software was also built alongside military personnel, not handed to them after the fact. That co-development approach is why it reflects how operators actually think, not how engineers assumed they do. That difference matters more than most outsiders realise.

Where Is Comand AI Already Being Used?

This is not a proof-of-concept living in a lab. It is deployed.

Comand AI’s next-generation C2 platform has been tested and deployed with operational units in France, Germany, Ukraine, and allied nations.

Ukraine. Let that sit for a second. Ukraine is not a sandbox exercise. It is the most data-rich, pressure-tested environment for battlefield technology on the planet right now. Every platform that operates there is being stress-tested in ways no simulation can replicate. The fact that Prevail is running there says a great deal about its maturity.

Comand AI has also opened a subsidiary in the UK with plans to expand there.

France and Germany are active. The UK is being set up. Ukraine is live. And other allied nations are already in the mix. That is a real operational footprint for a company barely three years old. It is actually remarkable when you think about it.

How Comand AI Plans to Spend the €32M

The money is not going into a savings account.

Comand AI said the fundraise will fuel expansion across NATO markets and into new operational domains, including air and maritime. Expansion into air domains is already underway.

Ground operations are the current core. But modern conflict is multi-domain. Air, sea, and beyond all require the same kind of rapid, coordinated decision-making that Prevail is built to support. Getting into those domains is the next phase.

Plans also include scaling the product, hiring senior AI talent, and potential acquisitions. At the time of the €8.5m round, the team was around 20 people, and Mougeolle said he intended to more than double headcount within six months.

With €32m now in the bank, that pace only accelerates. And that talent pool they are pulling from, ex-Palantir, ex-OpenAI, and military veterans, is not easy to build. But once it is built, it compounds fast.

Comand AI showed up at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris with further announcements. Expeditions, an early investor, described the company as being at an inflection point. Eurosatory is the world’s largest land defense exhibition. You do not get a stand there unless you have something real to show.

How Comand AI Compares to Palantir and Other Defence Tech Players

Comand AI knows exactly who it is competing with. And it is not being subtle about it.

Mougeolle has said directly that Comand AI competes more with Palantir than with hardware-focused defense companies. Rather than chasing specific use cases, Comand AI is focused on the scale of an entire region, like Ukraine, with its software platform.

Palantir is a deeply embedded, multi-billion dollar company with over two decades in US and allied defense operations. Calling it your competition is a bold move. But the logic is sound.

US firms like Palantir and Anduril operate with a software-first approach that builds smarter, faster, and cheaper than traditional defense contractors. Europe has lacked a homegrown equivalent. That is the exact gap Comand AI is positioning itself to fill.

And the broader market is validating that logic. European defense tech deal count grew 67% compared to 30% in the US, and battlefield AI software is increasingly replacing hardware-centric approaches to enable faster decision-making in contested environments.

But here is what separates Comand AI from the crowd. It is not trying to build everything. It is going deep on the command layer. The part where decisions actually get made. That focus is a strategic choice, and it is the right one.

Why European Defence AI Is Attracting Big Money Right Now

The timing of Comand AI raising €32m is not lucky. It is structural.

European defense and resilience startups pulled in $8.7 billion in funding in 2025. The war in Ukraine did not just reshape geopolitics. It reshaped capital allocation. Every NATO government is now asking the same question: can our forces move faster and decide better than an adversary? Software is the answer they keep arriving at.

Mougeolle said it clearly: “Operations where orders were given by speech and text are giving way to operations where perception, decision, and action are defined and executed by algorithms. The nations that adapt fastest will prevail.”

That is not a marketing line. It is a description of what is already happening on active battlefields. Right now. Today.

And yet, even with record investment in 2025, European defense spending remained well below NATO’s 3.5% GDP target, leaving real gaps in critical areas. That gap is both a problem and an opportunity. Companies that can deliver software-driven capability faster than the traditional procurement cycle will win those contracts.

Comand AI was founded three years ago. It is live in four countries. It has a strategic equity investor in Saab. It has a product, Prevail, that military units are actually using in active conflict zones. And it now has €32m to push further, faster. That is not a startup story anymore. That is a company finding its footing as a serious player in a market that suddenly, urgently, needs exactly what it is building.
